Element 3 – Identify and Access Future Learning Opportunities
Along with the system of competency-based training, there was the development of certain career paths for security personnel. Previously a person became a security officer with little training and little chance to enhance their job or educational skills to go on to related career areas.
The pre-licensing training courses and provisional licenses in most states take their units of competency from the CPP07 Property Services Training Package. This is a Nationally Recognised training package that contains a number of qualifications relevant to the security industry.
The various state licensing bodies have selected what they believe to be the most relevant units for their particular states. The amount of training varies depending on the number of units the licensing body requires for licensing. In some areas the number of units you need to complete would make up a Certificate II level qualification, whilst other areas the requirements exceed this level.
Career path options include:
- Unarmed security officer
- Crowd controller
- Cash transit officer
- Monitoring security officer
- Dog patrol officer
- Private investigator
Security industry qualifications include:
- CPP10107 Certificate I in Security Operations
- CPP20212 Certificate II in Security Operations
- CPP30411 Certificate III in Security Operations
- CPP30607 Certificate III in Investigative Services
- CPP40707 Certificate IV in Security & Risk Management
- CPP50611 Diploma of Security & Risk Management
Other specialised training is available in self defence and defensive tactics. Batons and handcuffs may be carried by security officers in certain circumstances. To work for companies like Armagard or Brinks carrying and transporting cash, a firearms licensing course is required.
Some states require security consultants to be licensed and include training in Certificate IV in Security and Risk Management as part of the licensing requirement. Similarly, a career path in security training can be available to experienced and qualified people.
